Currents recieves Award of Merit at Art in Public Places Exhibition and Juried Competition – 2009

Dogwood Fest names sculpture winners

The Dogwood Arts Festival has announced the winners of the 2009 Art in Public Places exhibition. Awards will be distributed at a Tuesday luncheon at the Square Room on Market Square.

Best in Show will be presented to Marvin Tadlock for his 12-foot stainless steel and cast stainless steel sculpture, “Coke is Fun II,” on exhibit at McGhee Tyson Airport. Tadlock, a resident of Bristol, Va., will receive $5,000.

Honorees will include second place winner Douglas Gruizenga (“Strings”), $1,000; third place winner Bill Brown (“Window”), $500 ; and honorable mention recipients Jim Collins (“Vol Watcher”), Kenneth Thompson (“Don’t Search for Meaning In This Sculpture”), Jenn Garrett (“Currents”), Jan Chenoweth (“Basket in Open Space 3″) and Roger Halligan (“Cross Negredo”), $100 each.

Art in Public Places is still available for public viewing, with 25 sculptures placed throughout Krutch Park, World’s Fair Park, Volunteer Landing and McGhee Tyson Airport. The sculptures are available for purchase through Nov. 13.
